A Conversation Between a Libertarian and Demoradical

On the right! Himself, Rob Burroughs

She said rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened then asked, 'How is your friend Audrey doing?' She replied, 'Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over.'

Her father asked her, 'Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend Audrey, who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.'

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, 'That's a crazy idea. How would that be fair? I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work. Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree.

She played while I worked my tail off!'

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently 'Welcome to the Republican Party.'

On the Left, Herself, Canary Burton friend and webmaster

Canary says, Are you a Republican?

A less government interference and intervention Lebertarian for the most part, which makes me a lot closer to the Republican party most of the time.

Actually I am an Emersonian New England Individualist and a Jefersonian Federalist that does not really like either party right now. Nobody seems to really want to protect our borders, language or culture and nobody seems to want to be fiscally responsible... so... I really do not know who I am going to vote for in November.

The last person I voted for was Ross Perot. I mostly vote against people but I vote for borders, language, culture and fiscal responsibility. I believe in equal opportunity coupled with equal responsibility - hard combination to find. I believe socialism in general leads to legislated mediocrity and political correctness is just an insidious form of censorship. I do not believe anyone has the right to not be offended and I do not believe the government ought to "protect" us from our own stupidity. Cause and effect has been circumvented by law with disastrous effects over the last fifty years.

There ya have it.

You have the right to your ideas even when we disagree... and when we disagree and can agree to disagree, we prove we are living in a republic and not the chaos of popular mob rule or the mentality of the least common denominator - pure democracy will alway fall to the level of the most easily manipulated, emotional and uninformed masses... mobs seldom think but rather only feel... thus creating chaos and true inequality.

I hope I haven't bored you.

I have always enjoyed our differences as well as our similarities.

Interestingly, I believe small scale communism works - the Amish come to mind, certain artist colonies (driven by passion) and of course the ultimate community - family.

I believe in self-reliance and independence - which makes our current dependence upon foriegn oil an absolutely ridiculous situation for our nation to be in.

We have an incredible amount of untapped resources (oil, natural gas and nuclear) for conventional power we are not utilizing which has forced us to depend upon middle east oil, the profits of which fuel the coffers of our enemies, weakening us while making them stronger.

As a nation of innovation, we have fallen behind in recent years, allowing the media to sap our attention spans, our addiction to junk food to poison our neurological well being and allowing big pharmaceuticals to dictate our medicine (including the drugging of an entire generation to treat the false diseases ADD and ADHD which are caused by poor nutrition and media addiction)

I want good science not emotion to pave our path into the future. Moderation and balance being the key words, a holistic approach to the issues of our planet and our nation. Being good steward to our planet requires seeking new solutions to old problems - energy, hunger, freedom - life, liberty and the pursuit (not guarantee) of happiness.

That was actually the message of the story I sent you. We all understand personal responsibility for ourselves but seem to forget the law of cause and effect when looking at social issues. Treating the symptom will never irradicate the problem.

So called diversity in place of unity has divided the nation into small factions with no intention to exhibit consensus building. I believe Gene Rodenberry was right - "infinite diversity in infinite combination" should be our goal not infinite separation.

Us-them thinking will destroy a nation built on the principals of all for one and one for all. We have become a nation that feeds the multitudes around the world but forgets our own.

Unfortunately one of the few groups that still believes in self-reliance and community in that balance is the Mormon church (interestingly enough, of course, is the fact that the Mormon church is a product of a time when America was growing fastest!)

The reward of innovation and excellence has fallen to the legislated mediocrity of Political Correctness. I find it interesting that I often have to deal with a great deal of pressure to lower standards and expectation in order to accomodate various "needs."

For example, in order to comply with the students with disabilities act, I was required to make accomodations for a deaf person who decided to enroll in a music appreciation class.

Common sense can easily recognize the stupidity in that situation, however, common sense does not apply to legislated mediocrity dictated by the Federal Government and the irrational emotional response put into law by Congress (both liberals and conservatives have proven to be equally idiotic.)

As for the current President and Vice-President, we have the government our laziness and apathy deserves. As long as the general populace is content to be spoon fed the pabulum of big government in the hopes of being relieved of personal responsibilty we will only have more of the same.

An Obama nation would be an abomination of empty rhetoric and vacuous platitudes.

A Hillary nation would be a nation led by the obsession with and the blind addiction to power.

A McCain nation, well - I did not trust him in the previous election cycle and I do not trust him now ( I still question whether he was brainwashed by the Viet Cong and may be the worst Manchurian Candidate of all).

Canary, I have a feeling we are not all that far apart in our beliefs only in our personal implementation of our beliefs and our concepts concerning how to go about the implementation of our beliefs.

You have been a friend from the first day I met you. A breath of fresh air in a stale world of sameness. Karma always wins.

Take care, I hope to continue this coverstaion soon.

You and my brother.

Alan just died of ALS recently, but we argued and knashed our internet teeth and snail mail leters, before that, for years and years and years.

It was fun. I'm not exactly a Democrat, although that's what I seem to have to vote. I may be really Independant, but QUITE far left. I'm probably Communist, but the American kind.

Yeah, I know that if some people get given to, they no longer have any drive. I've seen it happen. But there are ways to share that don't take away the need for work.

It's the manner of work that is paid as opposed to the work that is not paid. Trading sweat equity for money in the building of a home works, like Habitat. Trading work for services, babysitting for lawn care. These are not a handout. At this time, we need to clean up our sandbox or the sandbox is pushing us out.

Building wind turbines, solar panels and installation, developing better fuel than from corn (we have grasses that produce much better quailities and quanities than corn)These would be good jobs. We need to get the smaller farmer back in the field, we're importing way too much of our food.

Maybe it's time to hold up the space program, fund medicade/medicare, or something like it, as NO ONE can afford the dentist anymore unless they earn 170,000 a year. Heck, I've never earned over 15,000!!! I cannot afford the doctor OR dentist.

I'm for the border fence. Meanwhile I'm also for putting businesses in Mexico just to make Mexicans want to stay home. You don't see any mob of Canadians swarming over the border. Deporting illegals? Probably neccessary, although will take a long time and money. Many illegals need to be guided to getting legal, like those who entered 25 years ago and are productive and their whole family and network is here. We need compassion as well as have a hard nose. I know the companies who hire illegal workers at sub minimum wage (minimum wage is way too low for words)need to be stopped. Lets put the LAW there first

This president? I think he's a total jerk, with no brains and in need of AA principals and some therapy. And that's just because he's become father of the bride!!! But, he has managed to accidentally expose everything that's crumbling in our Empire. And that may be a good thing. John McCain is a clone now and way too old. I used to think if he was elected, at least we'd have an honest man. And then I watched him change all his values one by one. ICK!

I actively opposed Iraq with the whole fiber of my being. And I've done everything I can to stop it. Enuf said. We needed to be in Afganistan..look what's happening. Karl Rove is an idiot/genius.

Basically we brought all that's happening on "ourselves" with our lust for Empire. Read what happened to Greece, the first almost Democracy

I worked in an antique clothing store in Washington DC. After awhile I knew the monitary hierarchy of this three story empire. White men, most money; Black men, next; White woman, next and black woman last.

In the summer people don't shop much for clothing. Our manager freaked out every year even though I pointed out it was a natural and constant fluation and why not stop worrying. Everything was fine.

Noooo. After June he always laid off the black seamstrees that we kept very busy year round (if we were allowed). He laid her off for 2 months..every year. The lowest paid..every year. The three employee's the manager had came to him and said they were each willing to give up a portion of their own pay in order to keep the seamstress working. Our manager refused.

What do you call the workers? Independants, Democrats and Green Party.

The boss was an idiot and bigot - sounds like Ted Kennedy to me - not willing to allow the development of wind turbines in Massachussetts because it would ruin HIS view.

Bigotry and idiocy have no party boundaries.

In Oregon, farming has been almost brought to a total standstill over an "endangered" species of fish that was not originally native to the area and was being exterminated by the Federal Bureau of Land Management and the Fish and Game Department. The EPA and the came in along with the Army Corps of Engineers and shut down all irigation because the draw down of water from the lake behind the dam would endanger this fish. The fish was a predator to the indiginous fish of the region but it had to be protected.

All Democrats or just the idiots?

In Washington, Boise-Cascade, one of the largest paper and lumber companies in the world, had come up with an alternative to clear cutting or harvesting old growth forrest: farming poplars, which grow like weeds in this area. They planted 500 square miles of desert land as a poplar forrest - looked like corn rows of trees. The intention of course was to clear cut the poplars and let them regrow from the stumps - you can't kill them without digging them up.

When it came time for Boise-Cascade to start harvesting their farm of trees several "environmental groups" began litigation and other more radical factions began spiking the trees. An attempt to develop an alternative to the continued use of old growth forest for paper was nearly derailed.

All Green Party members or just the idiots?

I think the problem lies within the idea of action as the result of emotion as adverse to rational thought. For example: The "Heat of Passion" defense has been eliminated from our court system to the benefit of women all over the US who no longer have to fear death at the hands of an enraged spouse without at least the comfort of knowing their murderous spouse will have to answer for what is obviously a crime.

Yeah, the boss in the seamstress story was maybe an idiot, but more likely a retrograde world viewer awhich is paternalistic. This "natural order" is the way too much of America still works. In fact this story was set in Washington DC, our nation's capitol. Did you know the powers that were, did not put a subway to Georgetown, the ritzy part of town? To slow the pace of Blacks coming in. I'm ashamed. It makes me shiver.

This speaks to the first story you wrote about the grades being equalized between two disparete students.

In fact, thinking of that story, I don't believe this kind of thing would happen in a world even created by Democrats or Greenies or THE WEIRDPARTY. It's the distribution of goods and services that would and should be implimented. That is, if there were no corruption. As if there was no corruption, yeah, right. Maybe humans need corruption in oder to root itself out. Ha. I'm a person who would like every human, to have a clean and usable room to live in. The lowest home for a family to be a two bedroom, well made home.

One should be able to make as much money as one wants and live in a huge mansion with servants if one wishes. But not on the back of homeless, disabled and "crazy" people much less people who swam the river to get here from a REALLY poor country. I watched, while living in our nation's capitol, programs that paid part of new homeowners mortgage every month. That meant a zillion women, mostly, could get their childern inside, taken care of, while they worked a job. Lot's of people we're lifted up, sorta like the GI Bill did after WWII. I hated to see that program get chopped. In fact, a family I knew personally had to bring one child home from university and not send one to Math Camp because they had to go to work to keep the house. More story. My father was a cop. On his salary his wife stayed home, we had a lovely house and I was groomed for college. They didn't have money for my college, But I could go to work and put myself through Community college. See, that's the thing every family needs, asperations that can be achieved.

And Ted Kennedy...He is my hero, not that I agree with everything he says or does, but that he's been able and willing to stand up for what I believe in.

As for those wind turbines. You bet EVERYONE wants them. But why they have to put them in the shipping lanes is beyond me. Probably shallower there. I've seen PLENTY of oil platforms and other sea structures built in deep water, why not these turbines? The view would be ok, turbines are beautiful.

We don't want every boat threading them constantly to get to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. THAT's the fight. It's not rich people and their view. Maybe more like rich people and their island buasiness. In fact, they aren't all rich, either islanders or visitors. That's what's popular to put on the news. I'd hate to be a ferry captain if they were put right where everyone is boating. Or flying in in small planes for that matter. I have been eyeing AND emailing for a site off Chatham Bars. We could all still see them but they would not be a danger.

I would love to have a wind turbine right in my front yard. Except I live in a lovely old cottage colony and it's a condo now. So they won't let me fly a flag, much less have a turbine. Turbines ARE going up on Cape Cod, however. We have lots of wind, especially up high. Ya know, Wellfleet is just as elite as a place can be. But it has income ranges from $10,00 a year to Zillions. We have a food pantry in a church. I use it myself sometimes.

Wow, Boise Cascade started "doing right" and the environmentalist stopped them? Who's the dummy in charge of that group? And what did Boise Cascade do about it?
