Scholarship Opportunities
At-risk, first-generation and minority students have numerous scholarship opportunities available to them at Columbia Basin College. Scholarships that are based on need, ethnicity, first-generation status, discipline or vocation are all available through a variety of sources.
For the 2005-2006 academic year, the CBC Foundation awarded $97,000 in scholarships, many of which are based on financial need. The Office of Diversity also awards scholarships to underrepresented students. In February 2005, Hispanic College Night was held and four students received scholarships. Two students received $1,000 scholarships and two received $500 scholarships. Opportunities are available for African American students to receive scholarships through the Office of Diversity and the AAAS organization, which awards three $500 scholarships annually.
Several federal grant programs also provide scholarships to students. A grant funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Diversity Recruitment and Retention program, provides scholarships for students interested in USDA related fields such as agriculture, textiles, biology, food science, human nutrition and human development. In its second year, the Diversity Recruitment and Retention program serves 16 students, who have each been awarded $2,000 dollar scholarships. The Computer Science, Engineering, Math & Science Scholarship program (CSEMS) is a partnership grant with Washington State University that awards scholarships to students who are underrepresented in these fields. To date, the CSEMS program has awarded 30 scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 dollars each.
